Iconic Women of Kerala
For International Women's Day 2017 I created a series of portraits of three iconic women from Kerala's history.
Nangeli was an Ezhava woman who cut off her breasts with a sickle to protest against the Breast Tax in 19th century Kerala.
Unniyarcha was a legendary warrior of the 16th century, trained in the Kalaripayattu martial arts and the heroine of several Vadakkan Pattukal (ballads of North Malabar.)
Umayamma Rani of Attingal was described by the Dutch as a 'young Amazon', who was 'feared and respected by everyone and noted for her noble and manly conduct.'
